I was a slave to email, and it was ugly. My program was open all day and all night. I was spending about 75% of my time scrolling, reacting, deleting, forwarding, filing, and fretting over my inbox. So I decided to wage a war. The sheer volume – that is by nature organized in chronological order – made it impossible to prioritize and I was overlooking things that were important and actually required action. The volume cluttered my brain and workspace. The volume of email was stressful because it was a constant reminder of everything I wasn’t getting to. We spend a lot of time working – so why shouldn’t we create happiness in our workplace? Work does not have to be another four-letter word — we have a lot of control over our physical & mental space. Rather than waiting for “it” to happen, we can create the space where we smile and produce amidst the chaos and deadlines.

I recently realized that I’ve lied to myself AGAIN about my work. I’m so busy. My work is so hard. I’m so stressed out. Waaaaaaaaaaaah (enter Lucy cry). Granted, some of it is hard & yes I am busy. But most of it I’ve created myself – I have a part – and that’s the truth.
Same dance, different tune — I’ve been here before. But somehow I forgot the lessons I had learned.
My lies are sneaky. They creep in slowly, disguised as my being a productive-worker-bee and they are dangerous. They hurt my work. They hurt my relationships. They hurt my health.
